As the global leader in complete railway infrastructure systems, we are proud to announce a groundbreaking milestone in sustainable steel production: we have successfully produced and delivered the world’s first hydrogen-based rail. This innovation is part of a comprehensive research project at our Donawitz site and highlights our commitment to climate-friendly mobility solutions.
The new “green” rail is made from a mix of scrap and hydrogen-reduced pure iron, produced through the HYFOR pilot project in Donawitz. Further processing took place in our in-house research steel plant, Technikum Metallurgie (TechMet), and continued in our adjacent rail rolling mill. Like all our products, this rail features exceptional hardness and high wear resistance.
The first hydrogen-based rail has already been installed at Linz Central Station – a visible symbol of transformation in steel production and railway infrastructure. With this development, we are actively contributing to our climate goals.
As part of our greentec steel program, we are following a clear roadmap to transform steel production. Starting in 2027, electric arc furnaces powered by green electricity will be commissioned at our Linz and Donawitz sites. Our long-term goal: net zero CO2 emissions in steel production by 2050.
